Crafting a premium, rich wallet that would last a lifetime if taken care of properly was what planted the seed for Hentley back in 2014. The concept was to build the highest quality wallet possible, without sacrificing anything. We wanted to build a wallet that wouldn’t break down over time, would be free of zippers, buttons or hardware that were commonly the cause of wallets breaking down. Leather, if treated well, is one of the most incredible natural materials that simply ages with you and gets more supple the more you use it. Premium leathers won’t tear or deteriorate if taken care of properly. And it’s these characteristics that formed the basis of recreating old school traditional leather craft with minimalistic designs that translated to the modern world.
Through endless research, manufacturing techniques, international and local leathers and endless prototypes, Hentley was born in February 2015 on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
Hentley to this day is still 100% Australian owned and operated in Sydney. Our leather goods are completely handmade from premium vegetable tanned Italian leathers that are light enough to not way your pockets down but strong enough to withstand the journey you put them through.
We strongly believe in less is more. Our designs are very minimal, allowing you to simply carry what you need and avoiding the clutter. The simplicity of each design ensures it won’t date over time with fashion trends. The timeless designs will effortlessly fit into your aesthetics as it grows with you. We utilize traditional leather manufacturing techniques to produce our leathers. Every wallet we create is unique and will come with natural markings and this is to be embraced.
Vegetable tanning is a process that takes considerable time to produce the leathers we use in our wallets. We do not use any chrome tanned leathers that over 90% of the industry use as these are much cheaper and will deteriorate over time. Vegetable tanning requires experienced craftsmen to successfully produce the vegetable tanned leather. Vegetable tanning allows the leather to age naturally. This gives our wallets a beautiful, rich appearance that gets better the more you use it. The leather continuously matures and alters gradually over time as it develops a unique patina, often becoming darker and more supple.
As leather is a natural material, each piece is unique and comes with natural markings. These marks are to be embraced and not looked at as if they were a defect. The markings make each product unique and will develop over time with you as you wear your product in overtime.
Using traditional, hand crafting techniques we ensure that no stitch is out of place. We hand select each piece of leather to complement the other panels in the wallet. Each wallet is built up and thoroughly checked before it gets packed and shipped out.
When it comes to the art of producing fine leather goods we’d like to think we are setting the benchmark for the industry. We’d like to promote other companies to focus more on the quality of the products they produce rather than mass production. In doing so we would all create products that last considerably longer, therefore eliminating waste and the ideation behind fast fashion.
